e-Books Made Easy: Workshops Using Freeware

From Word to Kindle Direct Publishing (90 min)

Amazon is the world’s largest e-book retailer. Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) allows you to publish an e-book by uploading a Word manuscript to KDP’s website. However, your Word document must be properly formatted to convert to a Kindle e-book that will meet industry standards.

Learn how to format your Word manuscript so it will convert

to an e-book with paragraph styling, page breaks at the end of
chapters, and a functioning table of contents.

EPUBs Made Easy: Creating E-Books Using Freeware (120 min)

Learn to use Sigil, considered to be the best free EPUB editor, and create a short e-book in a form ready for uploading to Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Step-by-step—from converting a Word manuscript for importing into Sigil to generating a functioning table of contents—you’ll learn the techniques and tricks to efficiently create a feature-rich e-book.

This hands-on workshop is the quickest way to experience formatting, customizing, and producing an e-book. Using Sigil allows you to precisely control the look and function of an e-book in ways that are unavailable when uploading to KDP directly from a Word document.

Workshop topics Include:

  • Manuscript preparation
  • Creating chapters in Sigil
  • Sigil tools for efficient xHTML markup
  • Using cascading style sheets (CSS) to customize your e-book style
  • Uploading and formatting images
  • Cover formatting
  • Creating hyperlinks
  • Generating a spine table of contents and an HTML table of contents
  • Validating your EPUB

Advanced Styling for Kindle: Focus on Fiction (120 min)

Chapter opening flourishes not only make your e-book stand out but may also increase reading comprehension by visually signifying chapter starts.

Using a cascading style sheet (CSS), you will learn to apply advanced chapter styling to an e-book. This workshop will cover the CSS code needed for you to implement drop caps, up caps, small caps, and the use of color to distinguish your chapter openings.

Equipment requirements: Laptop loaded with Sigil

Prerequisite skills/knowledge: Sigil introduction course (EPUBs Made Easy) or basic HTML

Advanced Styling for Kindle: Focus on Nonfiction (120 min)

Nonfiction e-book formatting often differs from fiction formatting. Using color, text boxes, and images can make your non-fiction e-book stand out and aid reader comprehension. This workshop will cover using Sigil to style the nonfiction e-book.

Equipment requirements: Laptop loaded with Sigil

Prerequisite skills/knowledge: Preferably EPUB Made Easy course, or basic experience with HTML

Advanced Styling for Kindle: Focus on Poetry (120 min)

If you are thinking about creating a poetry e-book, this workshop is a must.

The importance of verse structure to poetry creates challenges for the e-book designer. Uploading a Word document to Kindle Direct Publishing will not produce a well formatted poetry e-book.

In this workshop, you will use Sigil (a free EPUB editor) to style a poetry e-book. Learn how to format verse using hanging indents, non-standard spacing, and alignment techniques.

Equipment requirements: Laptop loaded with Sigil.
